Our Philosophy and Mission

The Reading Forward Project is built on a foundation of over 25 years in teaching and leadership. Our experience includes teaching students (children and adults) of many different cultures, languages, and learning styles, struggling readers, students with dyslexia, dysgraphia and other challenges.

The goal is to help educators, school leaders, parents, and adult learners understand the science of reading and how this impacts instruction in our schools. We can come together to learn, grow and support each other based on research and always with respectful discourse. Together each and everyone of us can make a difference.

 

Did you Know?

Student data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) shows that only about 30-35% of students across the US are proficient at reading, writing, listening, and speaking. ​We are not happy with these outcomes and we think you'll agree that these statistics are problematic! 

The Reading Forward Project has emerged out of hope for our collective desire to make a positive change in our thinking about what it really takes to build a reading, writing speaking and listening brain. Our hope is that we can increase knowledge to successfully help all learners gain literacy skills. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As we move this conversation forward, we will work to provide resources to help ALL learners of all ages gain literacy skills.

  • Learners that speak one or multiple languages

  • Learners that are dyslexic 

  • Learners that have dysgraphia 

  • Learners that have ADHD

  • Learners that are typical, general education students

Many states across the country are in various stages of developing requirements to support Dyslexia. The National Center on Improving Literacy shares a national map on where states stand.

What About Schools?

Schools across the country have been evaluating their structures as they learn frameworks such as Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). This framework allows schools to look at how they support all students in the appropriate instruction and interventions to ensure their students receive the education and support they need to be successful in school. MTSS is a proactive approach to teaching and is often used to help students that are struggling to gain literacy skills, but it works to help all students.

 

The MTTS framework's application begins by teaching all classroom students in a large group. Screeners are then used and students who are identified as facing challenges in gaining skills move into different "tiers" or groups to receive different levels of support. Then, monitoring is used at each tier level to evaluate student growth and potential challenges. 

  • MTSS Tier 1 – Universal Instruction (Includes the entire class of students)

  • MTSS Tier 2 – Targeted, Group Interventions (Identified students are offered small group support)

  • MTSS Tier 3 – Intensive Individualized Interventions (Identified students are offered personalized support)

 

 

What About Research?

 

Research indicates that classrooms that implement a MTSS framework teaching approach experience greater instructor effectiveness.

About Nancy:
The Reading Forward Project
Founder

Osko has over 25 years of teaching and leadership experience.

Throughout her experience, Nancy has been immersed in multiple cultures and languages providing her with a unique perspective to help guide English Language learners. As a result, she has earned her certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Her work focuses on teaching strategies aligned with the science of reading. She has become a literacy coach and has worked in various international and United States based leadership roles in public education.

 

  • She emphasizes a collaborative leadership style seeking innovative solutions while supporting districts as they build a sustainable, Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

  • She coordinated the education of school district leaders about the science of reading (SoR) and guided them in developing useful support within their district. The established supports include an inquiry framework and standardized process and have led to increased student achievement in literacy skills.

As part of a 5-year project, Osko facilitated teacher training to build a Multi-Tiered System of Support within Ohio districts. She supported the district in working towards improved literacy practices. As a result, she provided feedback on the project as a Regional Early Literacy Specialist for Ohio's Systemic Improvement Plan. She also become a Professional Learning Facilitator for LETRS: 3rd Edition of Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling and is honored to deliver this professional development nationwide. 

 

An active member of the Northern Ohio Dyslexia Association (NOBIDA) for the past nine years, she was appointed to the NOBIDA Executive Board in January 2020. Osko is also an executive board member of the Reading League Ohio.
